Gonzalo Moratorio received his PhD (2012, in Molecular Biology) between Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay and University San Francisco, California. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Virology Department of the Institut Pasteur at Paris, France (2012-2018). He is currently Associate Professor of Virology at the School of Science, Universidad de la República, Uruguay; and Head of the Experimental Evolution of Viruses Laboratory at the Institut Pasteur of Montevideo, Uruguay. His studies have helped to unravel the molecular basis of viral attenuation through experimental evolution approaches. In addition, he has been a science enthusiast and activist, promoting basic research to enhance innovation. In 2020 he was distinguished as one of the 10 most relevant scientific personalities by the journal Nature
